National Guard Unit Returns Home To Luverne
By Jim Juhl on May 11, 2012
It’s good to have daddy home. Luverne’s National Guardsmen returned to hugs and kisses after a long year of serving our country in the Mideast. It was a perfect spring day for a fire department escort to the Luverne Armory. Jim JuhlJim Juhl is photographer and owner of Myhre Studio in Luverne, MN where he [...]

Family Portrait in Prairie Grass
By Jim Juhl on February 17, 2012
It was another beautiful fall day, especially for early November. I had the good fortune of spending an hour with Scott and Peggy Adams and their family at Blue Mounds State Park which lies just north of Luverne. This was their favorite image probably because of the unlikely hand holding of their two sons! That’s [...]

Touch The Sky Prairie Moonrise
By Jim Juhl on January 7, 2012
It was an amazing day, for early January, that brought me to Touch the Sky Prairie northwest of Luverne. No snow, clear skies and a high temperaturature of 45 makes it hard to stay inside on what should be a cold blustery day. The low angle of this January afternoon sun reveals the texture in [...]

Luverne Cardinal Football Section Win
By Jim Juhl on October 28, 2011
Some days it seems like you’re always on the wrong side of the field. Luverne scored six touchdowns and Matt Overgaards second quarter reception was the only one I managed to capture. Photos from Tuesday’s game are in the gallery. Good Luck Cards! Jim JuhlJim Juhl is photographer and owner of Myhre Studio in Luverne, [...]

Luverne Cardinal Football Wins
Photos from Luverne’s October 7th 36-8 homecoming win over the Worthington Trojans and October 14th 48-12 win over the Lennox, SD Orioles are now in the gallery.
Brandon Klein’s touchdown reception against the Orioles.
The best touchdown photo of the year, almost. Brett Heronimous’s airborne touchdown effort against the Trojans was called back for a penalty.
Luverne Marching Band
It’s so cool that the drum majors get uniforms with capes. Who else gets capes? Superheroes. So in my book, that makes drum majors superheroes. Look at the power they wield over an entire field of musicians. Have you ever tried to get a musician to do anything? They’re a bunch of free-spirited creative types that are long on fun and short on, well, let’s just say it would take a superhero to get them to march together. It reminds me of that Todd Rundgren song about not working as much as drumming.
Photos from the Luverne Marching Band’s two halftime performances on September 23rd and October 7th are in one gallery HERE. I was on the east side of the field for the first performance and the west for the second. I learned the hard way that photographing a trombone player from their left side does not make for a great photo because their instrument covers their face, so that’s why there’s only a couple of trombones from the October performance.
Photos in the band gallery are for your viewing pleasure. I do this because I enjoy it. Feel free to print them out for your scrapbook or whatever. If you put one on Facebook, please tag me in the logo. Prints are also for sale for a nominal fee. They are hosted through SmugMug and printed and shipped from Bay Photo in California.

New! Metal Prints at Myhre Studio!
Just in, a shipment of metal prints. These stunning images are printed on aluminum and they come in several different finishes. This cluster of four 12×12 images featuring the amazingly cute Ailynn, have a satin finish over a white base.
This next print is a black and white printed on the uncoated aluminum so the texture of the metal shows through. See the next photo for a close up that shows the grain.
The prints come backed with a metal hanger that holds them away from the wall about 1/2 inch so they look like they’re floating. It’s one of those products that you really have to see for yourself. I’m really jazzed about this new way to present images and We’ll be getting some more in the gallery soon.
Tim & Jennifer
I really don’t do weddings. But, every once in a while I have a weak moment and I can’t say no. I ran into Jennifer and her mom last year on the Annual Luverne Art Gallery Tour (which is ironic because I was a tourist not a participant). Somehow they talked me into committing to photographing their wedding and now I’m really glad they did. I had a great time and both families were just wonderful. Tim and Jennifer are a fantastic couple and it was really a treat to be able to spend the afternoon with them.
The wedding was held at the Dayton House in Worthington, MN. It’s an 1890s home that’s been restored and is available for events and lodging. It’s a wonderful place for a small wedding with stunning architecture. This first image of Jennifer’s dress is a HDR or High Dynamic Range image. It’s made by taking a bunch of shots and setting the camera so each on is a different exposure. You start out way under exposing and then change the exposure a little bit at a time until you’re way over exposing. Then the images are put into Photoshop and it magically turns it into a HDR.
This second image was take in the upstairs hallway. I’ve been just hooked on these strong backlit images for a couple of months now. I suppose you could call this a quasi-silhouette since the subject is only slightly illuminated. Again, just a fantastic backdrop for a wedding.
This last image is one of those where I haul out my studio light powered by a battery-inverter combination to overpower the full sunlight. Thankfully there was a brother-of-the-groom handy to hold the light stand so it didn’t blow over. Also, the wind really wasn’t blowing that hard. I had Tim hold the veil and on the count of 3 give it a little flip (without ripping it out of the bride’s hair) and jump back so he wasn’t in the image. Tim didn’t jump quite fast enough so I had to do a little content aware fill in Photoshop to fix it. I didn’t bother removing his shadow so you can still see him in the lower left.
Photos with Santa
This was a record year for our annual Photos with Santa event held in conjunction with Luverne’s Winterfest celebration. This year we raised over $900 for the local SHARE program. In addition to that, 20% of the photos taken had at least one child crying. It makes you kind of feel bad for Mr. & Mrs. Claus.
SHARE is a local organization that collects groceries, clothing and toys and then distributes them to families in need around Christmastime. Last year they helped out 205 families. We are honored to be able to help out such a well run organization that helps many Rock County residents this time of year. A few of my favorites follow.
