Jim Juhl's blogPortraits with Santa at Winterfest
We're doing photos with Mr. & Mrs. Claus this Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Luverne Elementary School Commons during Luverne's Winterfest Celebration. The cost for the session and a print is a $10 donation to S.H.A.R.E., the local non-profit organization that collects food, toys and clothing for Rock County families in need around the holidays. The background, designed by local artist Carol Ceynowa, will be similar to last year's. Please join us in supporting S.H.A.R.E. By Jim Juhl at 2008-12-04 23:27

Disappointing EndBlack Friday took on a new meaning to the Luverne Cardinal football team and their fans on Friday after a disappointing end to a very successful year. It was a great season of football and just of few days after Thanksgiving, I am thankful that I was fortunate to share it with you in pictures. Photos from the game are here. What struck me about Friday's game was the sea of red in the stands. Check out this photo and make sure to view the full size version. Can you see yourself? I believe attendance at a game, championship or not, four hours away from Luverne, says volumes about the appreciation for the effort of the team and the coaches. Good job team! Semifinal WinThe Cardinal's third semifinal win in the Metrodome in as many years kept the enthusiatic Luverne crowd on it's feet until the very end of the game. Hawley closed the 21 point deficit to seven and with the ball on the Cardinal five yard line and three seconds left to play, the Luverne defense persevered. In the above image, Trevor Stoffel catches a pass from Ryan Hoff in the third quarter. Photos now in the gallery. By Jim Juhl at 2008-11-18 21:48 | read more
On to the Dome, Again! The Luverne cheerleaders make a fitting backdrop for Jake Clark's touchdown reception that brought the Cardinals within two points of Triton with just two minutes to play in regulation. Wow pretty much sums up the team's comeback from a 14 point deficit with eight minutes to play in Saturday's quarterfinal game that gave Luverne a 48-42 win in overtime and a third trip to the Metrodome in as many years. Lots of photos this week's gallery. By Jim Juhl at 2008-11-10 03:12
Superheros and PumpkinsIt was a big year for pirates, superheros and pumpkins at this year's (now maybe annual) Halloween portraits. We raised over $300 plus an arm-full of non-perishable food items for the Rock County Emergency Food Shelf. It's great to see so many children on Main Street for the annual event that is organized by the Chamber. The studio staff comment about the event was "crazy!" We went through $40 worth of candy in a little over an hour and photographed over 60 quite scary trick or treaters. Click here to view the Gallery. By Jim Juhl at 2008-11-06 22:38 | read more
Section 3AA Champions, Again!Congratulations to the Luverne football team for their Section 3AA title after defeating Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 35-14 Friday in Marshall. I enjoy watching #89 Phillip Altman who spent his night pressuring the quarterback. In this photo, Phillip capitalized on a high snap that went over the head of TMB quarterback Shane Erickson and recovered the loose ball to set up Ryan Hoff's touchdown run. Second Cardinal Playoff WinSenior Matt Fodness runs for a big gain in Saturday's playoff win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran. It was a perfect day for football with just enough wind and mud to make the game interesting. Photos from the game are in the gallery. The game was remarkable on many counts but the most significant was the high level of sportsmanship by both teams. Despite their loss, the MVL players, coaches and fans were positive and encouraging right up through the end of the game. One would think that should be a given in High School sports but sadly it has been much the opposite. For some teams, who are not in the playoffs, profanity, insults and humiliation are the norm. It would do us all well to take a lesson from MVL and, win or loose, good calls or bad, to remain positive and encouraging. By Jim Juhl at 2008-10-27 11:23 | read more
First Playoff WinIt was a cold and rainy night. Perfect for a fall football playoff game. Luverne's 50-0 win over the Saint James Saints was viewed by a smaller and colder crowd than usual. In the photo, #24 Derek Petersen scores his first of two touchdowns. Link to Gallery. By Jim Juhl at 2008-10-23 23:30
